MPC's "all-in-one" computers provide just the right design for Children's Hospital Boston
Gary Smith
IT Hardware Supervisor
Taking Care
At Children's Hospital Boston, computers are a vital part of the environment.
PCs are integrated into almost every part of the hospital, from patient rooms to hallways to
nursing stations and even in the operating rooms. Gary Smith, hardware supervisor for the
hospital's IT staff, needed a PC that satisfied the hospital's requirements for flexibility and
a space-saving design.
Smith has standardized on MPC Computers' ClientPro® 424 All-in-One desktop PC, a
system specifically designed for space-constrained environments where flexibility is
paramount. This unique PC has its circuit board literally mounted on the back of an LCD
panel, so that there is no bulky desktop or tower chassis to get in the way. Smith originally
chose the unit for the Intensive Care Unit, and has since integrated the system into every
other function of the hospital. Some of the All-in-One PCs, such as those in the Intensive
Care Unit, are mounted on hydraulic booms that can be swung around a room as a doctor
or nurse works with a patient.
The All-in-One design is important not only for its small footprint and flexibility, but also for
its small size and lack of modular components. "The All-in-One PC actually helps us with
infection control," Smith explains. "With fewer separate parts, we have less equipment to
keep clean and free of dust and bacteria."
Beyond the quality and functionality of the All-in-One product, Smith is very pleased with the support he
receives from MPC. He speaks with the account team almost every day and subscribes to several value-added
services. Smith participates in MPC's Self-Maintainer program because of his familiarity with PC servicing and
troubleshooting. This service allows him to order replacement parts directly online without having to speak
with MPC's tech support team. He gets the parts he needs quickly and easily, and still has the option to call
MPC Tech Support if he needs additional assistance.
Smith also uses MPC's unique Advanced Exchange program to service the All-in-One PCs. If a PC has a problem
that he and MPC Tech Support can't solve, MPC ships him a replacement unit overnight, pre-loaded with
the identical serial number to the failed unit. Smith simply replaces the user-serviceable components (hard
drive, CD drive, mini PCI card) and he is back in business with minimal downtime.
"The performance and flexibility of the All-in-One PC have exceeded my expectations," Smith concludes.
"Many of the doctors and nurses feel that they need the All-in-One PC now to effectively perform their jobs."
