In spring 2008, Gartner Research revised previous estimates to show faster-than-expected growth in desktop virtualization, predicting 4 million VMs by 2009 and 660 million by the end of 2011.
In a 2008 CIO Research survey of about 300 enterprise IT managers:
  • 25 percent reported that they are already using virtual desktops
  • 13 percent plan to implement them in the next year
  • 21 percent plan to make the move in one to three years
  • 37 percent said they currently have no plans to deploy virtual desktops
A 2007 Forrester Research survey of nearly 600 IT managers in Europe and North America revealed three key perceived benefits of desktop virtualization:
  • Cost (52 percent)
  • Security (49 percent)
  • Manageability (46 percent)
